17 Feared Dead As Gunmen Attack Benue Community During Easter Celebrations

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State during Easter celebrations.

The assault reportedly took place on Sunday when suspected armed attackers stormed the community, opened fire on residents, and set several houses ablaze. Eyewitnesses said the нападение came without warning, leaving multiple casualties, missing persons, and widespread displacement.

Residents confirmed that 17 bodies have been recovered so far, while search operations are ongoing in surrounding bushes for others still unaccounted for. The attack also led to the destruction of homes and properties, forcing many survivors to flee.

A local resident, who spoke anonymously, described the incident, saying: “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”

The incident has further raised concerns over recurring violence in parts of Benue, particularly in rural communities that have experienced repeated attacks by suspected armed groups. Witnesses recounted how families ran for safety as gunshots echoed across the area.

Reacting to the development, Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, condemned the attack in strong terms.

“Benue state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia strongly condemns the heinous attack carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on the peace-loving people of Mbalom in the Gwer-East Local Government Area,”

“The Governor describes the barbaric act as unacceptable, and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state. He expresses deep sympathy to families affected by the attack and assures them that the government stands firmly with them in this difficult time.”

The governor also pointed to what he described as a pattern of “calculated and selective attacks” in parts of the state and pledged to strengthen security measures to prevent further violence.

He commended security agencies for their response and urged them to intensify efforts to track down those responsible.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing, as concerns continue to grow over the safety of vulnerable communities in the state.
