Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest sitting head of state, celebrates his 92nd birthday on Thursday after over four decades in power. Despite speculation, he has yet to confirm whether he will seek an eighth term in the upcoming October elections.
The deeply fragmented opposition and many political observers widely expect Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, to extend his rule. Following a contentious 2018 election, his administration has intensified political repression, with dissent met by arrests and harsh penalties, according to human rights organizations.
“The president has stated that he will announce his decision at the appropriate time,” Communication Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi said last month.
Amid ongoing rumors about his health, authorities recently clarified that Biya was in Switzerland, a frequent retreat destination for him. Upon his return to Cameroon in October, his public appearances have been sparse, limited to official photographs, a regional summit in Yaoundé, and a few televised speeches.
Supporters continue to urge him to run, with some insisting he remains strong enough to serve two more terms. In his year-end address, Biya reaffirmed his commitment to serving the nation, citing widespread public support.
Despite his prolonged rule, Cameroon faces mounting challenges, including corruption, high unemployment, and ongoing violence. Insurgent attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP have destabilized the Far North region since 2009, while separatist conflicts in the English-speaking western regions persist.
Catholic bishops have voiced concern over the nation’s deteriorating state, describing widespread suffering and governance failures. Meanwhile, Biya remains steadfast, praising the country’s “tremendous progress” in his latest speech and warning against forces seeking to disrupt stability.
The government has not undergone a reshuffle since 2019, with several ministerial and parliamentary positions left vacant following the deaths of officials.
As election season approaches, Biya’s next move remains uncertain, but history suggests his grip on power is far from loosening.
