Hundreds of motorists were left stranded on Friday morning after a multi-vehicle accident on Kara Bridge, inward Mowe/Ibafo, caused severe traffic congestion along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash, which occurred around midnight, involved a Toyota Sienna and two Nissan Cabstar trucks, leaving vehicles damaged and disrupting the free flow of traffic during the early hours of the day.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), the accident was triggered by an articulated trailer that had earlier overturned on the bridge.
When Channels Television visited the scene, officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Nigeria Police were coordinating emergency response efforts. Tow trucks were also deployed to remove the affected vehicles and clear the roadway.
The incident created a major traffic backlog stretching from Kara Bridge to Otedola Bridge and beyond, with the gridlock also affecting motorists travelling through the Isheri-Olowora axis and Ogunusi Road.
To reduce the congestion and improve traffic flow, LASTMA said emergency traffic measures had been introduced.
“To ease movement, officials have temporarily opened one-way traffic from Berger down to OPIC Turning,” the agency stated.
Recovery operations were still ongoing as officials worked to completely clear the affected section of the expressway and restore normal traffic movement.
