Passengers sustained injuries on Monday morning after a train operating on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor was involved in an incident that forced the service to halt midway through the journey.
The passenger train travelling from Kaduna to Abuja failed to reach its destination as scheduled after the disruption occurred along the busy rail line linking the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State.
A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the development on condition of anonymity, as it is not within his purview to speak on such matters.
Passengers on board said the incident happened suddenly, sending shock and panic through the coaches as the train came to an abrupt halt.
Some passengers reported hearing a loud bang before the train jolted violently, throwing several occupants off their seats and causing confusion inside the coaches.
The latest incident, confirmed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, occurred near Asham, a section of the rail line that has witnessed similar incidents in the past. Authorities say no fatalities were recorded, but several passengers sustained injuries and were evacuated for medical treatment.
The Abuja–Kaduna route remains one of Nigeria’s busiest rail lines, heavily relied upon by commuters due to insecurity on major highways. However, recurring derailments and operational challenges have continued to raise questions about infrastructure quality, maintenance, and safety oversight.
What Happened
According to eyewitness accounts, the Abuja-bound train reportedly collided with another train along the corridor, forcing rail operations to stop temporarily while the situation was assessed.
The impact caused parts of the train to veer off the rails, leaving passengers stranded for hours as emergency teams responded. Several people sustained injuries of varying degrees and were later evacuated to safety for treatment.
What The Government Is Saying

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment and assured the public that there were no fatalities.
Meanwhile, Opeifa stated during that interview that he takes full responsibility for Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train, as he assured Nigerians that the ongoing investigation into the incident would be thorough and transparent.
“Beyond apologising to Nigerians, I want to state clearly as the Managing Director and Chief Executive, I take full responsibility. When it comes to safety, there is no room for indifference. Once something like this happens, the chief executive must own it and I do,” he said.
The MD said the injuries of four of the Abuja-Kaduna train passengers were serious. Opeifa stated, “Coming to the fatality and the casualties, there was no fatality. We thank God. That was a near miss because for this kind of accident or incident, you see some level of fatality, but we thank God for this.
‘And for those who were injured, four are serious, and another two or so were discharged immediately, and we will follow up on those that might still be in the hospital. I don’t know, as of this moment, we’ll follow up. So we’ll also follow up with the remaining 618 people on the train because of the post-traumatic experience. We have the full contacts and we’ll do that.”
He, however, said that though the incident should not have happened, the NRC would ensure that there was no recurrence.
“I want to assure Nigerians that an incident like this is not expected, is not prayed for, should not be happening, but where it does, it is to bring out the best in us. And I assure Nigerians that just as we are doing currently on the Warri-Itakpe, which he (the analyst) also mentioned, we shut down the Warri-Itakpe (route) three weeks ago.
“I ordered the shutdown for safety reasons, and if you see the level of work the men have been doing on the track, cutting it off and replacing it is to make sure things like this don’t happen,” he added.
Asked whether there was any suspicion around sabotage regarding the incident, Opeifa said, “It would be premature for me to speak on that because that will be undermining the authority that is meant to do the investigation. But I want to assure Nigerians that our tracks are safe from vandals and terrorists.
“This particular track is being monitored by the military. You can see that immediately it (the derailment) happened, within five, 10 minutes, the helicopter was there hovering.
“The Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian army are all along this corridor, and I think, for the record, we’ve not had any issue of banditry, terrorism attacks along that corridor. But you can’t wish anything away. The investigation will tell us what happened, and I wouldn’t want to comment because I’m a party to the investigation.”
Opeifa had, while briefing journalists in Abuja hours after the incident, said that some technical staff of the corporation, alongside the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and other relevant agencies, were on the ground at the train derailment site carrying out an investigation.
He also dismissed claims that the trains were not in good condition and said the refund of ticket fees had been initiated for all passengers on board.
The NRC revealed that it has completed an internal investigation into the derailment, and management has accepted all recommendations from the in-house team.
“While awaiting findings from the committee set up by the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Corporation reiterated its own findings, attributing the incident to operator error and excessive speed”, the statement partly read.
Opeifa further stated that all affected coaches and locomotives have been re-railed and moved to designated workshops for comprehensive evaluation and further technical work.
He said, “Our team of engineers has successfully repaired the main line to a level that allows us to safely resume operations. While train services will recommence, work on the secondary track will continue simultaneously. During this period, the second line will remain out of use until all necessary repairs are fully completed.
He also said that an official announcement regarding the resumption of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor will be made soon.
While revealing the in-house findings, Opeifa said, “We have also completed an in-house investigation into the incident, with management accepting all recommendations of the internal investigation team.
“While awaiting the outcome of the committee set up by the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Alkali, as well as the findings of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, we wish to state clearly that our investigation points to human error, excessive speeding, and misapplication of the emergency braking system.”
The NRC boss, however, clarified that while train services would soon recommence, repairs on the secondary track are ongoing and will continue until fully completed.
He further disclosed that a comprehensive safety and infrastructure assessment was underway ahead of the proper resumption of service in the corridor.
He added, “The engineers have now commenced a comprehensive safety and infrastructure assessment to ensure that all aspects of the corridor meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and reliability before operations resume. This phase includes a thorough evaluation of the repaired section and other critical infrastructure along the route.”
On injured passengers, the NRC confirmed that “Out of the 618 passengers on board the affected train, 22 sustained injuries and are at various stages of recovery. We have successfully contacted 512 passengers, while 71 are yet to be reached due to various reasons ranging from not responding, wrong numbers, and unavailability.”
Opeifa also expressed appreciation to passengers and the general public for their patience and understanding throughout the recovery process.
“The Corporation also extended gratitude to media organisations for providing timely updates and to security agencies for their role in ensuring the safety of both passengers and personnel during emergency and recovery operations.
“We acknowledge the support and understanding received from the office of the Honourable Minister of Transportation and the team at the Federal Ministry of Transportation”, the NRC added.
Why The Frequent Train Derailments
The recurring derailments along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor point to deeper structural and operational issues within Nigeria’s rail system:
- Aging and Weak Infrastructure: Reports show that damaged components, including rail sleepers and switching systems, have not always been fully replaced but temporarily patched.
- Poor Maintenance Culture: Critical equipment, including monitoring systems like CCTV and signaling tools, have been found to be unserviceable in past investigations.
- Human Error and Operational Failures: Speeding, improper braking, and inadequate training of personnel have been cited as major causes of derailments.
- Repeated Incidents on Same Corridor: The Asham section has recorded multiple derailments within a short period, indicating unresolved technical vulnerabilities.
- Pressure on the Rail System: Increased reliance on trains due to insecurity on highways has put additional strain on infrastructure that requires upgrades.
The latest derailment is expected to intensify calls for urgent reforms, improved maintenance, and stricter safety enforcement across Nigeria’s railway system as passenger demand continues to grow.
