Actor Idris Elba To Build Eco-Town On Island Off Sierra Leone Coast

American actor Idris Elba (51) has announced his ambition to create an eco-friendly city on an island off the coast of Sierra Leone.

The British actor will work with a childhood friend to develop the island of Sherbro. He now has government permission to pursue the project.

Sierra Leone is the country of origin of the actor’s father.

The goal is to develop the island into an economic hub for Sierra Leone and neighboring countries.

It is a 600-square-kilometer tropical island off the coast of the West African country. He is working with the architecture firm Foster + Partners to realize the project.

Development will begin around Bonthe, the island’s main town, but the scope of the project covers the entire island.

Sherbro has an estimated population of 30,000 according to the latest official data from 2013. A population of up to one million people is expected to live there after regeneration.

The plan also includes developing Sierra Leone’s first wind farm on the island, in partnership with Octopus Energy Generation. Its construction is scheduled for this year, depending on weather conditions.

Elba is best known for his starring role in the BBC police seriesLuther. In 2012, he won the Golden Globe for his role in that series.

Since last year, the actor can also be seen in the second film ofExtractionon Netflix. His father is from Sierra Leone and his mother from Ghana.

“The island of Sherbro, Sierra Leone, once under British rule, is now my canvas for change. As a British man deeply rooted in Africa, I am leading a transformative project on the island,” he wrote on X.
