Andy Burnham Outlines Priorities In Address As UK Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has officially assumed office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, marking the beginning of a new chapter in British politics.

Burnham formally accepted the King’s invitation to form a new government on Monday after outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer submitted his resignation following two years in office.

Before departing 10 Downing Street, Starmer defended his government’s record, insisting it had left Britain in a stronger position.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile, and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said during his farewell speech.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street after his appointment, Burnham delivered his first address as Prime Minister without using a lectern, describing the occasion as “a moment for reflection and new resolution.” He said Britain must “regain our stability once again,” acknowledging the political turbulence the country has experienced in recent years.

The 56-year-old noted that he is the seventh person to serve as Prime Minister since 2016 and said the country was ready for a fresh direction.

“What we’ve been doing hasn’t been working. That’s the way I see it. I am going to try and do things in a different way,” Burnham said.

Burnham Says Public Is Tired of Politics

The new Prime Minister admitted that many Britons have grown frustrated with politics and pledged to rebuild public trust through stable, long-term leadership rather than short-term decisions.

He revealed that his government has developed a “10-year plan” aimed at tackling the cost-of-living crisis while giving families more financial “breathing space.”

Burnham said further details of the economic strategy would begin to emerge from Tuesday, when his administration would explain how its plans to reduce living costs would be funded and implemented.

Priorities Of The New Government

Although he stopped short of announcing detailed policies, Burnham outlined the key priorities that will shape his administration, including:

• Tackling the cost-of-living crisis and boosting economic growth.
• Improving the education system to help more young people secure employment.
• Building more council homes to address the UK’s housing shortage.
• Reducing the country’s growing welfare bill through early intervention.
• Meeting Britain’s defence commitments.
• Expanding powers for regional communities.

He also stressed that his government would pursue a different approach to public spending by investing earlier to reduce long-term costs.

First Official Order: End Rough Sleeping

Burnham announced that his first directive upon entering Downing Street would be “to end rough sleeping in our country,” describing homelessness as an immediate priority for his administration.

His first major policy move had already come over the weekend when he scrapped the previous government’s proposed nationwide digital identity scheme, saying the funds would instead be redirected towards easing financial pressures on households.

Challenges Ahead

Burnham assumes office at a time when Britain faces significant economic and political challenges, including sluggish economic growth, rising government borrowing costs, an expanding welfare bill, irregular migration across the English Channel and growing global uncertainty linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

He is also expected to announce his new Cabinet in the coming days, including the appointment of a Chancellor of the Exchequer to succeed Rachel Reeves.

A former Member of Parliament and Mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham only recently returned to Parliament before emerging as Labour Party leader following Starmer’s resignation. He is expected to lead Labour into the next general election, scheduled for 2029, amid growing competition from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

Call For National Unity

Concluding his first address as Prime Minister, Burnham appealed for unity, urging the public to “pull with me” as his government works to “build a new national sense of unity, of common purpose and positivity.”
