Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has officially announced that Anthony Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, will face either Daniel Dubois or Tyson Fury in his upcoming bout.
Last month, Joshua aimed to reclaim his status as a three-time world champion but suffered a stunning defeat against Dubois at Wembley Stadium. In front of a crowd of 98,000, Dubois knocked Joshua down multiple times, ultimately delivering a decisive right-hand blow in Round 5, marking Joshua’s fourth career loss.
As Joshua looks to rebound and reclaim the heavyweight title, a rematch with Dubois is being considered for February 22, 2025. However, Hearn has not dismissed the possibility of a fight with Tyson Fury as well.
“It’s strange to say this after a knockout defeat, but AJ is actually in a good position,” Hearn told BBC Sport. “We’re focused on either Dubois or Fury next. No other distractions or warm-up fights.”
Fury, who has been linked to a potential superfight with Joshua for some time, is set to face unified champion Oleksandr Usyk on December 21, following a defeat to Usyk earlier this year.
Frank Warren, Dubois’ promoter, indicated that Dubois is likely to fight on the proposed date of February 22, 2025, but expressed concerns about Joshua’s readiness. “AJ is eager for revenge, but the timing is crucial,” Warren stated. “For the rematch to happen in February, training must commence soon. There are always minor injuries, and we need to assess AJ’s physical condition.”
Joshua might choose to wait for the outcome of Fury’s rematch with Usyk. Hearn noted, “It would be frustrating if we set up the Dubois rematch and Fury wins. We could be in a situation where we had the chance to fight Fury for the biggest bout in boxing next May.”
“Regardless of the outcomes, a clash with Fury is possible next summer. If Fury wins, AJ would fight him for the title,” Hearn added.
