Anthropic has set up a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical biology experiments as it expands into life sciences.
The lab was confirmed by Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, who said real-world lab work remains essential to biology.
Anthropic says its biology efforts aim to help develop treatments for rare diseases, combining in-house experiments with work involving external partners.
A spokesperson clarified that the lab is not specifically for drug discovery, without providing further details.
The move is part of CEO Dario Amodei’s broader ambition to use AI to advance medical research, including diseases he believes the pharmaceutical industry may overlook.
Drug development remains highly uncertain, with most experimental drugs failing to demonstrate safety and efficacy in clinical trials.
Amodei has a personal connection to the effort: his father died from a disease shortly before a cure became available, he said in a recent essay.
