In the early hours of Monday morning, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish community emergency service were deliberately set on fire in Golders Green, north London, in what authorities are investigating as a suspected antisemitic hate crime.
The vehicles, operated by Hatzola Northwest, a long‑standing Jewish volunteer ambulance organisation, were parked near the Machzike Hadath Orthodox synagogue when the blaze began.
Fire and Emergency Response

London Fire Brigade crews and police officers rushed to the scene shortly after 1:40 a.m. GMT, battling the inferno that engulfed all four ambulances. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze.
Although no one was injured, several oxygen canisters aboard the ambulances exploded, causing windows in a nearby apartment block to shatter. Dozens of residents were temporarily evacuated, with some seeking shelter as a safety precaution.
Police Investigation and Hate Crime Classification
The Metropolitan Police Service has launched a full investigation, treating the incident as antisemitic arson. Counter‑terrorism officers have been assigned to the case, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify suspects.
Police confirmed they are following leads and urged anyone with information to contact detectives. Although no confirmed arrests have been announced, the probe remains active.
Political and Community Reaction
UK political and civic leaders responded swiftly with condemnation:
- Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as “deeply shocking” and reiterated that antisemitism has no place in British society. He emphasised strong support for the Jewish community in the wake of the incident.
- London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the act “cowardly,” ensuring increased policing and community reassurance.
- Other senior figures, including opposition politicians and religious leaders, denounced the violence and urged unity against hatred.
Community organisations also voiced their alarm. Leaders from Golders Green described the attack as an assault on essential emergency services and the very fabric of communal life.
About Hatzola Northwest
Hatzola Northwest is part of a wider network of Jewish volunteer ambulance services known as Hatzalah, which operates in many Jewish communities worldwide. These organisations provide emergency first‑response care and patient transport, supplementing public ambulance services.
Locally, Hatzola volunteers have served Golders Green and surrounding areas for decades, often responding to medical emergencies regardless of the faith or background of patients.
Antisemitism in the UK
This arson attack comes amid a backdrop of elevated antisemitic incidents across the United Kingdom in recent years. According to official monitoring groups, reports of antisemitic hate crimes have remained high, with attacks ranging from verbal abuse and vandalism to violent assaults.
Experts and community advocates say tensions abroad and historic prejudices are among the factors contributing to these trends. Many Jewish communities in London and other British cities have called for stronger protective measures and greater social cohesion in response.
