Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Killed By Armed Robbers In Abuja

An ARISE Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, has been killed by armed robbers during an attack on her residence in Katampe, Abuja. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday.

In a statement issued on behalf of the management by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, ARISE News expressed deep grief over her passing:
Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement read.

Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues, was 29 years old. She joined ARISE News as a lively and engaging broadcaster, quickly becoming a familiar face whose work resonated deeply with audiences. Beyond her media career, she was also a trained lawyer and was described as a professional, supportive colleague and dear friend both within and outside the newsroom.

The incident has since been taken up by the Nigeria Police, who confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, has directed tactical units, including the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and the Special Intelligence Unit, to take over the case. Police sources revealed that Maduagwu lived alone in Katampe, a district along the Kubwa–Kaduna axis of the FCT, as her parents are based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Confirming the development, the Divisional Police Officer of Katampe, CSP Sadiq Abubakar, said his division had already begun an investigation into the robbery.

Also speaking, the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed that CP Adewale had deployed special tactical teams, including scene-of-crime experts, to participate in the investigation.
