Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been named the acting Supreme Leader of Iran.
This follows his election by Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council as the jurist member of the Guardian Council within the Leadership Council.
The Leadership Council is tasked with fulfilling the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader until the Assembly of Experts selects a permanent successor.
The 67-year-old cleric, a member of the influential Guardian Council, was confirmed as part of the three-member Interim Council by the Expediency Council.
Arafi will work alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, overseeing leadership duties during this transitional period, as mandated by law.
