Renewable energy developer Masdar has signed implementation agreements with the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to develop renewable energy projects in the country.
The agreements cover a capacity of 4,000MW with the right to develop an additional 6,000MW as part of a second phase. The total capacity of 10,000MW would the largest in the country’s history, according to Masdar.
The 4000MW first phase will comprise 1000MW of onshore wind projects, 1000MW of solar PV projects, as well as 2000MW of integrated offshore wind and green hydrogen projects.
The projects not only aim to produce power for domestic use but also aim to develop the nation’s infrastructure to accommodate energy export, specifically wind and hydrogen.
The implementation agreements were signed by HE Parviz Shahbazov, minister of energy, with Fawaz Al Muharrami, acting executive director of Masdar Clean Energy at an event in Shusha, held as a special session of Baku Energy Week.
The agreement for onshore wind and solar projects includes measures to study and strengthen the network and implement processes for the export of electricity. The second agreement includes measures to create wind power for production and export purposes, decarbonization, hydrogen production and export.
During the Baku Energy Week, Masdar also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) for the joint development of renewable energy sources.
