Chelsea’s efforts to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface have hit a roadblock as the player expressed a clear preference for German and Spanish football.
The West London club has been linked to making a significant attacking acquisition in 2025, with Boniface emerging as a prime target, according to TEAMTalk.
At 23, Boniface played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s success last season, helping them secure the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles. He recorded an impressive 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 matches across all competitions, despite being sidelined for part of the season due to injury.
The Nigerian forward has continued his stellar form this season, contributing four goals and one assist in just six games. While Chelsea is reportedly considering a £70 million bid for the former Union SG star, there’s speculation that Boniface would be a better target than Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, particularly since his wage demands are lower.
However, Boniface’s recent comments during an interview on Sporty TV suggest that a move to the Premier League may not be in his plans.
“I’ve said this long before I came to Europe, before I even had an international passport: I don’t really like the Premier League. I prefer German and Spanish football,” Boniface stated. “It’s not that I wouldn’t consider joining a top team, but if I had to choose, I’d love to play in Germany or Spain.”
In light of this, Chelsea is also exploring alternative options like Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. According to Transfer News Live, Chelsea scouts have been closely monitoring Boniface’s performances in recent weeks. His rise adds him to the growing list of Nigerian talents attracting attention from Europe’s elite clubs.
Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen last season from Royale Union SG for €20 million. His stellar performances helped the club clinch domestic titles and reach the Europa League final, where they narrowly lost to Atalanta.
Currently valued at €40 million on Transfermarkt, the striker has four years remaining on his contract. Leverkusen, the reigning Bundesliga champions, will be keen to keep him, having previously fended off interest from Manchester United by setting a £47 million price tag last summer.
