Chad National Inclusive Forum Concludes With Creation Of Vice President Position

The second edition of Chad’s National Inclusive Forum, organized by the government and tasked with reviewing the new constitution, in place since 2018, has ended with the main conclusion of the forum being the creation of the position of vice president.

The second national inclusive forum validated new reforms, including the restoration of the Senate, the Court of Auditors, but above all the creation of the post of vice-president, to the great satisfaction of the head of state.

The meeting was boycotted by part of the opposition, the main trade unions and human rights associations.

For part of the opposition, which accuses Idriss Déby of wanting to perpetuate his reign at the head of Chad, the creation of the position of vice president confirms concerns about the head of state’s desire to appoint one of his own to the newly created post.

However, it is unclear whether the future vice president will be elected on the same ticket as the president, who is putting his term back on the line next April Or if he will be appointed by the head of state.

According to the opponents, if appointed by the head of state, it would be tantamount to a misappropriation of votes.

The inclusive national forum was held from Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, November 1 to evaluate the Constitution in place since 2018.
