China has said it will firmly protect its national interests following a warning from US President Donald Trump that Washington would impose a 25% tariff on countries that continue doing business with Iran.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning criticised the move, stressing Beijing’s long-held opposition to trade wars.
“We have always believed that there are no winners in a tariff war, and China will resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” Mao said.
She added that Chinese authorities are closely watching the situation in Iran, particularly as unrest continues to spread across the country, and assured that steps would be taken to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals.
“We will take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens,” she said when asked about travel and tourism in Iran.
The comments come as Iran experiences one of its most significant waves of anti-government protests in recent years. Human rights groups estimate that at least 648 people have been killed during a violent crackdown by authorities attempting to restore control.
China remains one of Iran’s key economic partners, and analysts say the proposed US tariffs could disrupt trade relations, especially in the energy sector. Oil exports, a cornerstone of Iran’s economy, are expected to be among the most affected if the measures are enforced.
