Congo Ebola Death Toll Passes 1,000 As Confirmed Cases hit 2,536

The Democratic Republic of Congo Ebola outbreak has killed more than 1,000 people, with confirmed cases now at 2,536, government data showed late Wednesday.

The country’s public health institute reported 63 new cases detected on Tuesday alone, spread across the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and Haut-Uele. The death toll stands at 1,033.

Health officials and aid groups have warned that the outbreak may be far larger than official figures suggest, with a coalition of responders describing the confirmed numbers as only the “tip of the iceberg” given weak surveillance and access challenges in the affected regions.
