Court Adjourns El-Rufai’s Bail Hearing To March 31

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai will remain in detention after the Federal High Court in Kaduna adjourned his bail application to March 31, 2026.

The decision followed a tense court session on Tuesday, which attracted heightened security presence and significant public interest.

El-Rufai appeared in court alongside his co-defendant, Joel Adoga, as his counsel, Ukpon Akpan, argued strongly for his release on bail. The defence maintained that the former governor is entitled to his constitutional right to personal liberty and requires adequate time to prepare his case.

Inside the courtroom, proceedings were marked by intense legal arguments from both sides, focusing on the constitutional and procedural considerations surrounding bail in high-profile corruption cases.

The prosecution, however, opposed the request, stressing the gravity of the allegations and cautioning that granting bail could interfere with ongoing investigations.

After listening to submissions from both parties, the judge ruled to adjourn the bail hearing to March 31. The adjournment is expected to give the defence more time to prepare, while allowing the prosecution to further strengthen its case.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has accused El-Rufai of financial misconduct and abuse of office, with claims centred on the alleged mismanagement of public funds during his time in office.

With Nasir El-Rufai remaining in custody, the case continues to draw nationwide attention. The upcoming bail hearing is expected to be a critical moment, as the legal process unfolds amid broader conversations about accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in public service.
