A federal lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh, was granted bail of N500,000 by a Kuje Magistrate Court on Wednesday after being charged with assaulting Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya. The incident occurred on October 27, when Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh at Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, and a dispute arose over the delivery method.
Ikwechegh allegedly struck the driver multiple times and threatened to “make him disappear” without repercussions, adding that even the Inspector General of Police (IGP) couldn’t intervene. A video of the altercation sparked public outcry, prompting police to investigate following a petition filed by Abuwatseya.
The police report noted Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for the IGP’s office, currently held by Kayode Egbetokun. Following the backlash, Ikwechegh issued a public apology, admitting his behavior was unbefitting of a public official and committing to seeking counseling for better conflict management.
In court, he faced three charges: abuse of office, assault, and threat to life, pleading not guilty to all. His lawyer’s oral bail application was granted by His Worship Abubakar Sai’id, requiring Ikwechegh to present two sureties, each with residence within the court’s jurisdiction, and verified utility bills. The court adjourned the case until November 8.
