The Nigerian female U-19 cricket team, known as the Junior Female Yellow Greens, is optimistic about securing a spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia. Their confidence follows their qualification for the Super Six stage on Wednesday.
Despite a 41-run loss to South Africa via the DLS method in their final group-stage match, the team’s historic two-run victory over New Zealand on Monday and a shared point against Samoa ensured they advanced as the second-best team in Group C.
The Junior Female Yellow Greens are placed in Group 2 of the Super Six, where they will face England on Saturday, January 25, and Ireland on Wednesday, January 29.
Head coach Sarah Bakhita expressed faith in the team’s potential despite their tense finish in the group stage.
“We need to focus on helping the girls manage their nerves during crucial moments,” said the Kenyan coach. “I believe in their abilities, and as we prepare for tougher opponents in the Super Six, we’ll fine-tune our strategy and approach the matches with a positive mindset. If we secure full points, we’ll be in a strong position.”
Team captain Piety Lucky highlighted that the lessons learned from their match against South Africa will be instrumental in their Super Six campaign.
“The game against South Africa taught us many valuable lessons and gave us positives to build on. We’ll analyse what went wrong and also focus on the things we did well. With these adjustments, we’re confident of achieving better results and victories in the Super Six.”
Apart from their matches against England and Ireland, Nigeria will also closely monitor the results of the USA, who enter Group 2 of the Super Six with the same points as Nigeria.
