Dangote Group Invests $280M in CNG to Support Nigeria’s Clean Energy Transition and Economic Growth

The Dangote Group has announced a $280 million investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure, underlining its commitment to support President Bola Tinubu’s CNG initiative.

This investment not only strengthens Dangote’s position as a leader in the CNG sector but also emphasizes its dedication to reducing carbon emissions and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

With gas as Nigeria’s chosen transitional fuel, President Tinubu aims to foster private-sector investment and expand CNG infrastructure to boost energy efficiency and economic development. As part of this effort, the government will distribute one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles transporting passengers, food, and goods.

Dangote Cement, a division of the Dangote Group, is embracing this initiative by committing to a fully CNG-powered truck fleet. Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak explained that the $280 million investment focuses on acquiring 100% CNG trucks to facilitate the fleet’s transition to CNG by mid-2026. Currently, Dangote Cement has received 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks, with an additional 1,600 trucks expected by year-end, totalling 3,100.

This shift to CNG is a significant step in Dangote’s clean energy goals, with expanded CNG fueling infrastructure to support the growing fleet. The company is on track to meet its transition timeline, beginning with significant deployments starting Q1 2025.

Pathak noted that Dangote’s CNG investments also positively impact Nigeria’s clean fuel transition, highlighting a CNG station in Obajana capable of fueling over 3,000 trucks and a second station under development in Ibese.

Dangote Group President and CEO Aliko Dangote affirmed that this CNG adoption aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, targeting net-zero emissions by 2060.

He praised President Tinubu’s leadership in advancing energy efficiency, underscoring the importance of private-sector collaboration in achieving a greener future. The Dangote Group’s early CNG adoption positions it as Nigeria’s largest CNG truck operator, supporting the nation’s journey toward energy independence.
