The historic qualification sparked celebrations across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the achievement has been described as a moment of national unity and pride.

Dramatic Playoff Victory

DR Congo secured their World Cup place after defeating Jamaica 1–0 in extra time in an intercontinental playoff match played in Guadalajara, Mexico. The decisive goal came in the 100th minute from defender Axel Tuanzebe, whose goal was initially reviewed before being confirmed. The team had dominated much of the match but struggled to score during regular time before finally breaking the deadlock in extra time.

First World Cup Since 1974

The qualification marks DR Congo’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1974, when the country competed under the name Zaire. This will be only the second time in the country’s history that they will play at the World Cup, making the qualification one of the biggest achievements in the country’s football history.

Nationwide Celebrations

The qualification sparked celebrations across the country, including in conflict-affected regions where people gathered in the streets to celebrate. The achievement even drew praise from political leaders and groups involved in ongoing conflicts, highlighting how football briefly united the country during a difficult period.

World Cup Group Draw

DR Congo have been placed in Group K for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage. The tournament will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada and will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams.

DR Congo’s qualification is being seen as a historic achievement not just for football but for the country as a whole, providing a rare moment of unity and celebration in a nation facing political and security challenges. As the country prepares for its first World Cup in more than five decades, expectations and excitement are already growing among fans.
