The Edo State government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of students of Igbinedion Education Centre involved in a viral bullying incident that sparked public outrage.
The directive was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, during an interview on the Sunrise Daily aired on Channels Television.
Afegbua said the state government acted swiftly after videos of the alleged bullying surfaced online, raising concerns among parents and the wider public about student conduct and discipline in schools.
“It is quite disturbing. When we heard the news and saw the clips of the video, we were wondering what could have warranted such behaviour,” he said.
He condemned the actions captured in the footage, describing the treatment of the victim as unacceptable.
“There will be no justification for that kind of treatment. It is very unacceptable,” he added.
According to Afegbua, the government moved quickly to expel the students allegedly involved in the incident while also instructing law enforcement authorities to ensure those responsible face legal consequences.
“We took action almost immediately that led to the expulsion of the students involved. But it is not just about expulsion; we also directed the police to make sure the students are properly arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Afegbua said.
He also revealed that he personally contacted the state’s police leadership to ensure investigations were progressing.
“I placed a call to the Commissioner of Police this morning to be sure they are taking steps. He told me he is expecting the parents to bring the students involved, and after investigations, they will be charged in court,” he said.
The controversy began after a disturbing video circulated widely on social media platform X.
In the footage, two male students were seen allegedly beating and kicking another student who had fallen to the ground.
One of the attackers was reportedly seen dragging the victim by his suit and stepping on his chest while the boy cried in pain. A third student who recorded the incident could be heard pleading with them to stop.
The video triggered widespread criticism online and prompted disciplinary measures by the school.
Following the incident, the Edo State Police Command summoned the school management and directed that the students involved be handed over for investigation and possible prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Ministry of Education has established a five-member investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The committee is expected to determine what led to the attack and identify any other students who may have been involved.
Afegbua described the situation as a warning for parents, teachers and school administrators, stressing the importance of stronger supervision and discipline to prevent similar incidents in the future.
