El-Rufai’s Mother Laid To Rest As Remains Arrive Abuja For Burial

The family of former Nasir El-Rufai has confirmed the arrival of the remains of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Abuja ahead of her burial.

Hajiya Umma passed away on Friday, March 27, in Cairo, Egypt, following a brief illness.

Her funeral arrangements were disclosed by El-Rufai’s son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. In a statement shared on X, he announced that her body arrived safely in Abuja on Sunday morning.

“This is to notify the general public that the remains of our grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, has safely landed in Abuja. The Janazah Prayer is by 1 p.m. as announced last night.

“The prayers will take place at the National Mosque and she will be buried at Gudu Cemetery by the grace of God. May Allah SWT bless her soul and all those that passed away before her,” he wrote.

Before her death, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai had reportedly been living with her son in Cairo, where she was receiving care.

Her passing occurred during a period of legal challenges for her son, who had been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

He was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge, with the case adjourned until March 31, 2026, for the hearing of pending applications, including his bail request.

However, he was later granted temporary release from custody, reportedly to enable him attend the burial rites and be with his family.

Condolences have since poured in from prominent figures across the country, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, all of whom paid tribute to the late matriarch.
