Elon Musk has clarified plans for his Terafab AI chip project, saying his companies — not Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — will build and operate the planned chipmaking complex.
The latest Elon Musk Terafab update comes after speculation that TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, could play a major role in operating the planned facility.
Musk said on Wednesday that his companies would retain control of the project, although he left open the possibility that TSMC could lease part of the complex.
The clarification also comes as Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed that the US chipmaker remains involved in the project.
Elon Musk Terafab Plan Keeps Control In-House

Terafab is a planned Tesla-SpaceX semiconductor project in Texas designed to produce artificial intelligence chips.
Musk responded to suggestions that TSMC could eventually own and operate the fabrication facility by making clear that his companies intend to control its construction and operations.
“We will build and run the fab.”
He added that TSMC could potentially sublease part of the Terafab complex, but said its role would not extend beyond that arrangement.
The comments significantly narrow expectations about how deeply TSMC could become involved in the project.
Just days earlier, Musk had confirmed that discussions were taking place over possible cooperation between TSMC and Terafab, but said the talks were preliminary.
No formal partnership with TSMC has been announced.
What Is the Terafab Chip Project?
The Elon Musk Terafab project is an attempt to develop large-scale semiconductor manufacturing capacity capable of supplying advanced chips required by Musk’s technology businesses.
Artificial intelligence systems depend heavily on powerful processors to train models and perform increasingly complex computing tasks.
Demand for these chips has accelerated as technology companies invest billions of dollars in AI infrastructure.
For Musk’s businesses, greater access to semiconductor production could become increasingly important as Tesla develops autonomous-driving technology, SpaceX expands its computing requirements and xAI builds larger artificial intelligence systems.
Terafab could therefore reduce some of the companies reliance on outside chip supplies while giving them greater control over hardware used in their products.
However, the project remains under development, and important details about its eventual production capacity, technology and partnerships could still change.
Intel Says It Is Staying With Terafab
Musk’s discussions with TSMC had raised questions about whether Intel could lose its role in Terafab.
That possibility became particularly significant because TSMC and Intel compete in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
But Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said on Wednesday that the company would continue working with Musk on the project, according to Reuters, citing Bloomberg News.
Intel had already been identified as a partner in Terafab.
For now, Musk’s latest comments suggest that Intel remains involved even as discussions with TSMC continue.
TSMC and Intel did not immediately provide Reuters with additional comments on the latest statements.
Why TSMC Matters to Elon Musk Terafab
TSMC is one of the most important companies in the global semiconductor industry and manufactures advanced processors designed by several major technology companies.
Its possible involvement in Terafab attracted attention because chip fabrication is extremely complex and expensive, requiring specialised technology, equipment and expertise.
Having TSMC participate in some capacity could therefore provide Terafab with access to significant chipmaking experience.
Musk’s clarification, however, indicates that he does not intend to hand operational control of the project to the Taiwanese manufacturer.
Instead, any future arrangement could involve TSMC occupying or using a portion of the complex while Musk’s companies retain control of the larger facility.
Why Musk Is Building His Own Chip Capacity
The race to develop artificial intelligence has created enormous demand for advanced semiconductors.
Companies building AI models increasingly need access to large quantities of specialised processors, making chip supply a strategic issue rather than simply a purchasing decision.
For Musk, Terafab could provide a dedicated semiconductor ecosystem supporting several businesses simultaneously.
Tesla requires increasingly powerful computing systems for AI and autonomous-driving development, while xAI requires vast computing resources to build and run its models.
SpaceX could also benefit from greater access to custom chips as its satellite and space technology operations expand.
The Elon Musk Terafab project is therefore more than another semiconductor factory.
If completed at the scale Musk envisions, it could become a critical part of the computing infrastructure behind several of his companies.
For now, however, one point has become clearer: Musk says his companies intend to build and operate Terafab themselves, with Intel remaining a partner and any potential TSMC role significantly more limited than earlier speculation suggested.
