The European Union has pledged its support as Mali undergoes a transition to an elected government following last year’s military coup even as relations strengthen between Europe and the Sahel.
The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell Fontelles said this while holding talks with Mali’s top leaders in Bamako on Saturday, station that Mali can count on the support of the European Union.
He said the transition will serve as a basis for the new Mali, with a process and a calendar that should be followed, with elections, structural reforms, and good governance.
Young military officers ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18 after months of protest driven by his failure to solve Mali’s long-running jihadist conflict, and perceived corruption.
