FAAN Introduces Four Digital Payment Options

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has unveiled four digital payment options for airport access gates nationwide under its “Operation Go Cashless” initiative.

The move is designed to eliminate cash transactions at airport entry points and improve operational efficiency, in line with Nigeria’s broader transition toward a cashless economy.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, FAAN outlined the approved payment channels:

It wrote, “To ensure smooth and efficient access, the following payment options are available:

“FAAN Go Cashless Card – The fastest and most seamless payment option.

“E-Tag – Ideal for frequent users; enables automatic deduction without stopping.

“VIP Sticker – For authorised vehicles with approved access.

“ATM/Debit Card via POS – Available on-site; however, processing time may vary due to banking network issues.”

According to the authority, the Go Cashless card can be obtained at FAAN commercial offices and airport access gates. Users also have the option to register and manage their cards online via the official portal.

The cashless directive officially came into force on March 1, 2026, prohibiting cash payments at all FAAN-operated points, including toll gates, car parks and executive lounges. The policy aligns with broader financial system reforms championed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

First announced in September 2025 in partnership with Paystack, the initiative was initially introduced at major airports such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport before expanding nationwide.

FAAN maintains that the system will make transactions “faster, safer, and more convenient,” while potentially boosting revenue collection by up to 75 percent through improved transparency and reduced cash handling.

Despite its objectives, the first day of enforcement saw significant disruption at airports in Lagos and Abuja, where vehicular congestion led to delays and caused some passengers to miss their flights.

Motorists without preloaded access cards relied on POS payments, which slowed entry due to processing delays linked to banking network issues.

In response, FAAN has appealed for public cooperation and advised regular airport users to preload their cards ahead of travel to minimise inconvenience.
