The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stated that the fainting incident involving six suspects in court, which occurred before their arraignment, was a staged act intended to attract negative attention.
Egbetokun emphasized that medical support was immediately provided to the suspects, reaffirming the police’s commitment to the well-being of individuals in their custody.
On Friday, a total of 76 suspects—mostly minors appearing malnourished—were arraigned in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protest. Six of these individuals collapsed and were subsequently taken out of the courtroom for medical attention.

After their court appearance, each minor was granted bail set at N10 million, which sparked a wave of both domestic and international criticism.
In a statement dated November 1 and signed by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun affirmed that Nigerian law holds individuals of criminal age responsible for their actions.
“Today, an incident in court witnessed six suspects fainting, a deliberate and scripted attempt to attract negative attention,” Egbetokun remarked. “However, the Police Force ensured they received prompt medical aid, reflecting our commitment to their welfare despite the charges they face.”
The Nigeria Police Force, he added, is dedicated to safeguarding justice while respecting the rights of all, including minors. Egbetokun highlighted that Nigerian law, in line with global standards, holds individuals accountable once they reach the age of criminal responsibility, even for serious offenses.
He further disclosed that charges against the suspects include destruction of public property and threats to national security.
“Recently, the NPF arraigned 76 individuals on charges like terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony,” Egbetokun continued. “These serious allegations, which include threats to national security, were managed under strict legal provisions to ensure fairness and adherence to the rule of law.”
He concluded by urging the public to approach this case impartially and assured transparency throughout the legal process, stating, “The NPF values public interest in this case and remains focused on a transparent pursuit of justice, committed to best practices and respect for human dignity.”
