A devastating bus collision in northern Tanzania has left the country reeling, as two passenger buses collided and burst into flames, killing at least 37 people and injuring 30 more.
The crash occurred Saturday evening in the Sabasaba area, a remote part of the Kilimanjaro Region along the Moshi–Tanga highway. The resulting inferno severely damaged the vehicles, complicating efforts to identify the victims.
Authorities have yet to release the identities or nationalities of the deceased.
In response, President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her sorrow in a condolence message issued Sunday.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdin Babu, and to all the grieving families, friends, and relatives,” she said, as quoted by the Associated Press. “May the souls of those lost rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly. I pray for comfort and strength for their families during this painful period.”
President Hassan also called attention to the persistent issue of road safety, stressing the ongoing threat road accidents pose to communities across Tanzania.
Although the government has implemented various safety campaigns over the years, preventable traffic fatalities continue to plague the nation.
