Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the ongoing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, describing the process as peaceful, orderly, and efficient.
Speaking after visiting several polling units across Abuja, the INEC Chairman said the electoral process was progressing smoothly. According to him, the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has significantly improved accreditation speed and transparency.
“You can see that the election is orderly and peaceful. It has also been very efficient,” Amupitan stated while addressing members of the INEC press corps. “As far as the BVAS is concerned, I am very satisfied. The machines have worked effectively and efficiently.”
He revealed that presiding officers reported that voter accreditation takes less than five seconds, highlighting the improved speed of the process. The INEC boss also noted a strong voter turnout, describing it as a sign of growing civic awareness among residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
“There is a large turnout, which shows that people understand the importance of coming out to vote. So far, the election is well organised and peaceful,” he added.
On security arrangements, Amupitan disclosed that about 30 security personnel were stationed at polling locations he visited, maintaining order and ensuring a calm atmosphere throughout the exercise. He expressed optimism that the election would conclude successfully by the close of polls.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the INEC Chairman assured Nigerians of the Commission’s commitment to credible polls. He emphasized that the BVAS technology would continue to safeguard electoral integrity.
“The BVAS works very well and guarantees the integrity of the system. If you are not accredited, you cannot vote. Once accredited, you can cast your vote seamlessly,” he explained.
Providing updates from other parts of the FCT, Amupitan said reports from polling units have largely been positive, with calm conditions across most areas. He, however, acknowledged a brief security concern in Abaji, which was promptly addressed following the deployment of security operatives, allowing voting to resume without further disruption.
The FCT Area Council elections continue under close monitoring by electoral officials and security agencies, as residents exercise their democratic rights.
