Federal Ministry Intervenes in Osun Mining Conflict

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has launched an investigation into the ongoing dispute between the Osun State Government and Thor Explorations Limited, the owners of Segilola Resources Operating Limited. The disagreement centers around taxation and operational concerns.

Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to mediate between both parties and restore industrial harmony. The committee, led by Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, will include representatives from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Ministry of Labour and Employment, and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

In his statement, Dr. Alake expressed concern over the negative impact of mining operation closures on foreign direct investment (FDI). He stressed that such actions, taken without consulting the Ministry, risk discouraging investors and could lead to divestment from the sector.

“Mining is on the exclusive legislative list,” Alake stated. “The Ministry of Solid Minerals should be consulted before any disruptive actions are taken.”

The Minister highlighted the Federal Government’s efforts to promote investment in the solid minerals sector and emphasized that any halt in industrial production could undermine economic growth, employment, and community development.

Dr. Alake urged both the Osun State Government, led by Governor Sen. Ademola Adeleke, and Thor Exploration Limited to cooperate with the fact-finding team and maintain production during the resolution process.

He emphasized that industrial harmony is essential to protect the livelihoods of workers and support the nation’s economic prosperity.
