FG Alerts 10 States Over Flood Risk As Heavy Rainfall Looms

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a warning that several areas across 10 states could experience heavy rainfall capable of triggering flooding between April 8 and April 12, 2026.

The alert was released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment in a flood prediction notice dated April 8, 2026. The notice was signed by Usman Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

“The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period of prediction: 8th April – 12th April, 2026,” the notice stated.

According to the ministry, communities in Ebonyi State, Anambra State, Ogun State, Taraba State, Cross River State, Benue State, Imo State, Delta State, Rivers State, and Abia State are among those at risk.

Specific locations highlighted include Afikpo and Nkalagu in Ebonyi; Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, and Onitsha in Anambra; Ayetoro and Ilaro in Ogun; Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro in Taraba; and Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi in Cross River.

Other areas listed are Igumale in Benue; Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, and Owerri in Imo; Oko Anara in Delta; Port Harcourt in Rivers; and Umuahia in Abia.

The ministry emphasised that these areas and their surroundings may experience rainfall that “may lead to flooding” within the forecast period.

Earlier warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the federal government had cautioned farmers against early planting due to deceptive rainfall recorded in February and early March 2026.

Similarly, the Lagos State Government had advised residents in March to prepare for heavy rains and possible flash flooding as the rainy season sets in.

Authorities are urging residents and relevant stakeholders in the affected states to take necessary precautions to minimise potential damage and ensure safety.
