FG Inaugurates New Disciplinary Tribunal to Strengthen Building Standards

The Federal Government has launched the Builder’s Disciplinary Tribunal to reinforce accountability and professional standards within Nigeria’s construction industry. The tribunal’s inauguration, held in Abuja, was led by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, who stressed the critical role of ethics in construction practices.

“This marks a significant step towards enhancing accountability within the building profession in our country,” Dangiwa said. He noted the tribunal’s function as a regulatory body to uphold compliance with professional standards, warning that those who breach these standards will face consequences.

The tribunal’s formation follows recent building collapses, including a tragic incident in Abuja’s Lugbe area, where five people lost their lives. “This is not an isolated case but part of a recurring pattern requiring our urgent intervention,” Dangiwa added, emphasizing the pressing need for strengthened oversight in the industry.

Established under Sections 16 (1) and (2) of the Builders Registration Act, Cap B13, LFN 2004, the tribunal aims to uphold safety in the construction sector and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “This tribunal sends a clear message that negligence and compromised safety standards will not be tolerated,” Dangiwa emphasized, urging tribunal members to exercise fairness and integrity in their rulings.

Dr. Samson Opaluwah, Chairman of both the tribunal and the Council for Registered Builders of Nigeria, highlighted the tribunal’s role in fostering ethical conduct among builders, underscoring the importance of a “Code of Ethics and Professional Practice” to ensure safety.

However, he pointed out the challenge of unlicensed builders in the sector, advocating for expanded regulations to encompass all construction practitioners.

The Permanent Secretary, represented by Director Mr. Olatunde Ajayi, hailed the tribunal’s establishment as a vital step toward enhancing transparency and regulatory frameworks in Nigeria’s building industry. “This tribunal serves as a beacon of justice, ensuring the highest level of integrity in our building standards,” he stated.
