China PR played at a numerical disadvantage against Haiti for 79 minutes following Rui Zhang’s dismissal – and turned one point into three. It eclipsed the distinction of Chinese Taipei, who were a player down for 78 minutes against Nigeria, during which they went from goalless to 2-0 winners, in 1991. Hui Fang Lin was actually sent off in the fifth minute of that game, but back then matches lasted only 80 minutes and far less stoppage time was added.

Mai Duc Chung, who was 73 years and 41 days when he took charge of Vietnam against the Netherlands, is the now the oldest coach in the history of the men’s or women’s global finals. Otto Rehhagel, who was 71 years and 317 days when he guided Greece against Lionel Messi and Argentina at South Africa 2010, had held the record.

Germany had not lost in the group stage of a FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 28 years until being undone by a Linda Caicedo-inspired Colombia in Sydney. It ended a 20-game unbeaten run in the first phase – one including 16 victories – since a 3-2 defeat to a Sweden side spearheaded by Pia Sundhage in Helsingborg. Another golazo from the 18-year-old made her the second-youngest South American to score in multiple matches in the competition after a 17-year-old Marta in 2003.

USA stretched their unparalleled undefeated sequence in the tournament to 20 matches. Their last loss was 2-1 to Sweden in the group stage at Germany 2011. The USWNT did, however, see their record run of successive victories end at 13 games in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

16

Casey Phair, at 16 years and 26 days, became the youngest player in Women’s World Cup history when she came on for Korea Republic against Colombia. The Korea Republic forward outranked Ifeanyi Chiejine, who was 16 years and 34 days when she ran out for Nigeria against Korea DPR in 1999. When Phair was sent on against Morocco, there were 22 years and 256 days between her Kim Jungmi. It is the biggest age gap between team-mates in the tournament’s history, breaking the difference between Brazilians Formiga and Meg in 1995 by 191 days.
