Foreign Minister Tuggar Resigns To Contest Bauchi Governorship In 2027

Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has stepped down from his role as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to pursue his ambition of becoming governor of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who disclosed that Tuggar formally submitted his letter to Bola Tinubu shortly after noon.

According to reports, Tuggar is set to contest the governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress(APC).

His decision follows a presidential directive issued earlier in March, mandating all political appointees with ambitions to run for elective office to step down before the end of March 2026.

The directive, conveyed through the office of George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, applies to ministers, advisers, assistants, and heads of federal agencies.

It is anchored on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and is designed to prevent conflicts of interest as the country gears up for the 2027 general elections.
