Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Finally Surrenders to EFCC

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has responded to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to a statement from his media office.

The announcement, signed by the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, revealed that Bello’s decision to appear before the anti-graft agency followed consultations with his family, legal team, and political associates.

Bello was reportedly accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by several prominent Nigerians. He has faced ongoing scrutiny from the agency regarding alleged financial improprieties during his time in office. He, along with three others, is currently facing 19 counts related to money laundering involving N80.2 billion.

In the statement, Bello emphasized his commitment to clearing his name, declaring, “I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear.” He also highlighted his previous efforts to ensure due process in the ongoing investigation, asserting that he had been represented by his legal team in every court hearing related to the case.

The statement further noted, “The former Governor believes firmly in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and supports the fight against corruption in Nigeria.”

In April, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede had stated that he would resign if the prosecution of Bello did not proceed, affirming his commitment to seeing the case through to its conclusion.
