Gender distribution of gubernatorial candidates in 2023 Elections

Between 1999 – 2023, female political participation in Nigeria has been on an all time low.

Currently a total of 417 candidates are vying for Governorship positions in 28 states, but only 25 (6%) are women.

Despite strong female candidates like Aishatu “Binani” Dahiru in Adamawa state, there are still incredibly few women in political leadership positions in Nigeria.

As of March 2023, Nigeria is ranked 182nd out of 186 countries by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the international association of national parliaments. Even worse, Nigeria trails well behind other African nations like Senegal and South Africa.

Aishatu “Binani” Dahiru would become Nigeria’s first female governor if she were to win, which may pave the way for additional women to enter politics in that country.
