Gunmen Kill Five, Burn Homes And Abduct Residents In Niger

At least five people have been killed and several others abducted after suspected terrorists launched a fresh attack on Baga community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The assailants reportedly struck in the early hours of Tuesday, setting multiple homes on fire and forcing residents to flee for safety as the community descended into chaos.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that over 160 armed men invaded the area, using explosives to destroy buildings and properties.

“More than 160 terrorists attacked Baga early this morning, burning houses with explosives. As of this evening, the entire community is engulfed in flames with thick smoke rising,” the source said.

It was also gathered that at least eight members of a local vigilante group sustained injuries while attempting to resist the attackers but were overpowered due to the superior firepower of the invading group. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment.

Sources further revealed that the attackers had earlier rustled cattle from nearby Nada village on Monday before moving into Baga, where they carried out the assault.

Security personnel have since been deployed to the affected area to restore calm, although authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
