Former Ivory Coast head coach, Herve Renard, has revealed that he came close to becoming the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, potentially replacing Finidi George.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is still in search of a permanent coach, with Augustine Eguavoen currently acting as caretaker for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Libya.
Renard, a two-time AFCON champion and former coach of teams including Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, and France’s women’s national team, was a top contender for the Super Eagles job.
Speaking in an interview with French sports outlet L’Équipe, as reported by Brilla FM, Renard shared that the NFF had approached him with an offer he seriously considered.
“I was very close to going to Nigeria,” Renard said. “I spent days, even weeks, weighing the pros and cons before ultimately deciding to decline. It was the best offer I had received, but in the end, it wasn’t the right opportunity for me.”
As the Super Eagles gear up for the crucial AFCON qualifiers, the NFF remains in search of a permanent head coach.
