IMN Members Protest In Lagos, Kano Over Death Of Iran’s Leader

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shi’ites, staged protests across several Nigerian states following reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Demonstrations were recorded in Lagos, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, Gombe and Kaduna states, where protesters condemned the joint military action by the United States and Israel, which reportedly resulted in Khamenei’s death alongside members of his family. Similar protests were also reported in Bauchi and Yobe states.

Participants were seen waving Iranian flags, holding up portraits of Khamenei and displaying placards criticising both the United States and Israel while declaring solidarity with Iran.

The protests come against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East after coordinated airstrikes by Washington and Tel Aviv targeted Iranian sites. Both governments have stated that the attacks were intended to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and prevent further escalation in the region.

The strikes have sparked condemnation from Iran’s allies and supporters in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

In Nigeria, the IMN has long maintained ideological ties with Iran and frequently organises rallies and processions in reaction to developments concerning Tehran. The group has, in the past, clashed with security agencies during similar demonstrations.

Following the protests, acting Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu on Sunday directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to intensify security measures in light of unfolding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

According to Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, the directive forms part of proactive efforts to prevent any potential spillover effects from global developments.
