The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise will no longer take place before the 2027 general elections.
The decision was disclosed in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna following a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where the commission reviewed key electoral preparations and related matters.
According to the statement, the Commission said: “Following deliberations, the Commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election.”
INEC explained that the voter revalidation process is a crucial part of its responsibilities, aimed at maintaining an accurate and credible National Register of Voters. The exercise is intended to verify and update voter information, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and improve the overall integrity of the voter database.
The Commission noted that the process would have given registered voters the chance to confirm their personal details and make necessary corrections where required.
Despite the postponement, INEC reassured Nigerians of its commitment to electoral integrity, stating that it “remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.”
