In a flurry of activity, gunmen on Monday April 8, attacked the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) in Owerri, Imo state in south east Nigeria, releasing over 1800 inmates.

The Inspector general of Police Mohammed Adamu, in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer CP Frank Mba, has said that the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) are responsible for the attack.

He said that “The attempt by the attackers to gain access to the Police armoury at the Headquarters was totally and appropriately resisted by Police operatives on duty who repelled the attackers and prevented them from breaking in and looting the armoury”.

He also stated that the men, who came in their numbers, carried sophisticated weaponry like General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) causing destruction to police property and burning at least 30 police cars.

The attack is said to have taken place around midnight, and even though no lives on the side of the police force were lost, one officer sustained minor injuries to the shoulder.
