Iran Demands Recognition Of ‘New Iranian Order’ In Strait Of Hormuz Amid Ceasefire Tensions

Iran has called for international recognition of what it describes as a “new Iranian order” in the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions with the United States despite an existing ceasefire agreement.

Overnight, Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the United States of violating the ceasefire through several actions, including what he described as “violating Iranian adjustments in the Strait.”

Soon after, another senior Iranian lawmaker, Ebrahim Azizi, declared that there was “no alternative” but for the international community to recognise “the new Iranian order in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Security and navigation through the strategically important Gulf shipping route remain among the most contentious issues in ongoing U.S.-Iran ceasefire discussions, with both countries holding conflicting positions over who should regulate access to the waterway and under what conditions.

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran on 17 June, Iran agreed to use its “best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days.”

However, Tehran has since insisted that vessels coordinate with Iranian authorities before transiting the strait and has warned that attempts to use a shipping route designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are “unacceptable and completely dangerous.”
