The Duchess of Cambridge is coming up as the people’s choice for the office of colonel. Grenadier guard, It comes after the regiment’s previous colonel, the Duke of York, was stripped of all his military affiliations and royal patronages by the queen herself, earlier this month, as he faces a civil sexual assault trial in the US.

A senior source in the Grenadier Guards said  “From straw polling through the ranks, they would all love it to be Kate. We all admire the way she has fitted in and behaved, she never seems to put a foot wrong. Everything she has taken on she really commits to, and we want someone who will really engage with us.”

If the duchess, takes on the role, she will be the second appointed female colonel in its 366-year history.

The duke of York, 61, took over the honorary role with the grenadier guards from his late father, the Duke of Edinburgh, when Prince Philip retired in 2017.

But Andrew then stepped back from public duties in November 2019 following his interview with BBC news night.

The duke has been disallowed from using any of his titles including, honorary air commodore of Raf Lossiemouth; colonel-in-chief of the Royal Irish Regiment; colonel-in-chief of the small arms school corps; commodore-in-chief of the fleet air arm; royal colonel of the royal highland fusiliers, 2nd battalion, the royal regiment of Scotland; deputy colonel-in-chief of the royal lancers (queen Elizabeth’s own); and colonel-in-chief of the Yorkshire regiment.
