Kebbi Attack: Catholic Diocese Reports 24 Dead, Hundreds Displaced

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has raised alarm over the scale of devastation following a deadly attack in Kebbi State, revealing a significantly higher death toll and widespread displacement of residents.

During a press briefing in Yauri on Thursday, the Director of Social Communications of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Matthew Stephen Kabirat, disclosed that at least 24 people were killed in the assault on Debe village in Shanga Local Government Area contradicting earlier police reports that placed the figure at four.

According to him, the attack occurred on Easter Sunday around 5:00 p.m., when suspected terrorists stormed the community, unleashing violence that affected people across religious lines.

“The victims cut across Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers,” Kabirat said, noting that the diocese had compiled a verified list of those killed.

Beyond the loss of lives, the attackers reportedly destroyed key structures, including St Mary’s Catholic Church, a mosque, the catechist’s residence, shops, and several homes. The violence also spread to nearby communities such as Binuwa and Kalkame, where markets, the emir’s residence, and other properties were razed.

“The attackers specifically targeted men, particularly youths, and the assault continued into the following day, forcing many residents to flee for safety,” he said.

The diocese further revealed that it is currently sheltering 491 internally displaced persons at St Dominic Parish in Yauri. Many of those affected are in urgent need of food, clean water, medical care, and adequate shelter.

Kabirat explained that although some relief materials have been distributed, resources remain insufficient to meet the growing humanitarian needs.

He called on the Federal Government, the Kebbi State Government, humanitarian agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to urgently intervene and support the victims.

The cleric also appealed directly to Bola Tinubu and Nasir Idris to take decisive steps toward restoring security, enabling displaced residents to return home safely.

He stressed the importance of long-term solutions, including improved security measures, community rehabilitation, and sustained support for those displaced, while urging that justice be served for victims of the attack.
