Kim Jong Un Reappointed As Workers’ Party Leader

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been reelected as general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, with state media crediting him for advancing the country’s nuclear weapons program and elevating its global standing.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim secured the position with the “unshakable will and unanimous desire” of party delegates during the ongoing congress in Pyongyang. The gathering, held every five years since 2016, is expected to define North Korea’s political and military direction, with analysts anticipating further expansion of nuclear capabilities and stronger integration of conventional and strategic forces.

The congress also revealed a sweeping reshuffle within the powerful Central Committee, signaling a generational transition in leadership. Senior figures, including Choe Ryong Hae and top military officials Pak Jong Chon and Ri Pyong Chol, were excluded from the new 138-member body.

The party declared that Kim’s nuclear buildup has created a force capable of confronting “any threat of aggression” and “any form of war,” while “reliably guaranteeing” the nation’s future and “boosting the pride and self-esteem” of its citizens.

The meeting comes amid deepening ties with Russia over the Ukraine conflict, renewed engagement with China including Kim’s recent summit with Xi Jinping and stalled diplomacy with Washington and Seoul following the collapse of his 2019 summit with Donald Trump.
