Bandits have attacked a church in Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during a Sunday service in a disturbing incident that has heightened security concerns in the region.
The attack occurred at an ECWA Church in Omugo community, located in Ifelodun Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly stormed the premises and disrupted worship, leaving both congregants and residents in panic.
According to reports, the assailants took multiple individuals hostage before joint security operatives intervened. Three of the victims were later rescued through coordinated efforts by security forces.
A source within the Kwara South Joint Security Watch, who spoke anonymously, revealed that at least seven persons were initially abducted, although full details are still emerging.
Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, said security personnel were able to secure the release of three victims, while operations are ongoing to rescue others still in captivity.
She praised the swift response of security agencies, forest guards, and local vigilantes, noting that their combined efforts not only led to the rescue but also helped repel the attackers.
Olukoju further stated that the government has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and ensure the safe return of the remaining abductees.
The commissioner strongly condemned the attack on a place of worship, describing it as both cowardly and unacceptable. She reiterated the state government’s stance against such acts of violence, stressing that they have no place in society.
She also urged residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security operations by cooperating with authorities, adding that collaboration between communities and security stakeholders remains key to tackling the menace.
According to her, ongoing forest combing operations have already recorded progress in curbing criminal activities across affected areas.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that efforts will continue in partnership with security agencies and local groups to restore safety and stability.
