Lagos Govt Implements Traffic Diversion for Bridge Repairs

The Lagos State Government has introduced a two-month traffic diversion to facilitate emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, which connects to the Marina/CMS route. The repairs will take place from March 19 to May 26.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed that a section of the road—from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge—will be inaccessible to vehicles throughout the repair period.

“Similarly, the service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge (inbound Independence Bridge) will not be accessible to motorists,” Osiyemi stated.

“However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open to traffic.”

To manage congestion, the government has outlined alternative routes:

For those heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way, the advised route is through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and then Obafemi Awolowo Road leading to Ring Road.

For motorists traveling from Ahmadu Bello Way to the Third Mainland Bridge, the recommended path is Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Alfred Rewane Road, Osborne Road, and then onto Ring Road.

For those en route to Inner Marina or CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way, the designated diversion will take them through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and Obafemi Awolowo Road to access JK Randle Road/King George V Road.

For motorists coming from Inner Marina or CMS towards Ahmadu Bello Way, traffic will be directed along an available route.

Traffic Management Measures

Osiyemi assured residents that officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to regulate vehicular movement and minimize disruptions.

He urged motorists to be patient, emphasizing that the temporary closure is part of broader rehabilitation efforts on the affected sections.

The Federal Ministry of Works is handling the project through the Office of the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos.
