LG Election: Ogun Declares Friday Public Holiday

The Ogun State government has declared today (Friday) as a work-free day, to enable civil servants to travel to their respective local governments and participate in Saturday’s local government election.

Mr Kehinde Onasanya, Head of Service signed the circular where the announcement was made dated November 14, 2024.

It was also announced by the government that on Saturday, during the election, movement of people and vehicles would be restricted.

The statement read: “Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun approved the work-free day to enable civil servants to participate fully in the forthcoming local government elections, scheduled to take place across the state’s 20 local governments and 237 wards on Saturday, November 16, 2024.

“The work-free day ensures active participation in the electoral process, allowing citizens to exercise their civic duties without hindrance.
“This move demonstrates Governor Abiodun’s commitment to promoting democratic participation and civic engagement in Ogun State.
“This decision aligns with Governor Abiodun’s efforts to prioritise the welfare and participation of citizens in democratic processes.”
Permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies were advised to ensure compliance with the directive.
In another statement, it said, “Ogun State Local Government Election will be held on Saturday 16th November 2024. Movement of people and vehicles will be restricted between 8 am to 5 pm. Kindly plan your movement, communicate to family, friends and loved ones.”

The local government election, organised by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, will see the election of chairpersons for the 20 local government areas and councillors for its 236 wards.
