LG poll: LASIEC Warns That Ballot Snatching Will Lead To A By-Election

‎The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that any case of ballot box snatching during Saturday’s local government elections will trigger a by-election in the affected location.

‎This was disclosed at a press briefing on Thursday by the Commission’s Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), who reaffirmed LASIEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas in the state.

‎“There will be by-elections if a ballot box is snatched anywhere,” she said while answering questions from journalists at Tripple C Event Centre, Sabo Yaba, Lagos.

‎The LASIEC boss said, “While we don’t pray for such to happen,” there would be a need to conduct a by-election in any local council where such happened.

‎Responding to questions from journalists during the briefing, the commission stated that there was no threat or reason to delay the upcoming election.

‎Justice Okikiolu-Ighile assured residents of Lagos that the commission is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election across all 57 local councils in the state.

‎The local government and local council development area elections have been scheduled to hold on July 12, 2025.

‎To guarantee a smooth and secure election, the Lagos State Police Command announced movement restrictions for Saturday, July 12, 2025.

‎However, on Thursday, the police disclosed an adjustment to the timing of the movement restrictions across the state for the election.

‎In a statement released on Wednesday by the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the police confirmed the deployment of officers to strategic locations ahead of Saturday’s poll.

‎Also on Thursday, the command announced a revised schedule for the movement restrictions.

‎“To alleviate the problem of residents with critical medical emergencies and appointments, and those with longtime international travel plans in and out of the country, the restriction of vehicular movement is hereby readjusted to commence at 6:00 am and end at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 12, 2025, and not from 3.00 am as earlier announced.

‎“Members of the public are enjoined to cooperate and respect the new timing,” Hundeyin said in a statement.

‎Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, reaffirmed the command’s dedication to maintaining a secure, safe, and orderly electoral process.
