Liverpool have officially approached Newcastle United regarding a potential move for striker Alexander Isak, signaling their strong intent to add the Swedish international to their attacking ranks this summer, according to transfer expert David Ornstein.
While no formal offer has been tabled yet, Ornstein reports that the Merseyside club have expressed a willingness to do business in the region of £120 million. However, Newcastle remain firm in their stance that the 25-year-old forward is not for sale.
Liverpool’s interest in Isak isn’t new and has intensified following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota earlier this month. According to The Athletic, the reigning Premier League champions are prioritizing the signing of a top-tier No. 9 as part of their summer rebuild.
Isak has been a standout performer since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a £60 million deal. He has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies, including 27 goals in 42 matches last season, playing a pivotal role in securing a fifth-place finish and Champions League qualification. The Swedish star is under contract at St. James’ Park for another three years.
“Liverpool mean business,” said club correspondent Gregg Evans. “Their pursuit of Isak underlines the club’s ambition to build on last season’s title-winning campaign and assert long-term dominance.”
The Reds have already made headlines this summer by breaking their transfer record with the £100 million signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen — a deal that could rise to £116 million with add-ons. Earlier this week, Liverpool also rejected a €67.5 million offer from Bayern Munich for winger Luis Diaz.
The interest in Isak may also be influenced by the potential departure of Darwin Nunez, who is attracting serious attention from Napoli and Saudi club Al Hilal.
Described by data analyst Thom Harris as “a one-of-a-kind centre-forward,” Isak brings a rare blend of physicality, agility, and technical finesse. At 6ft 4in, he is renowned for his dribbling, sharp finishing, and threat on the break — attributes that would suit Arne Slot’s attacking system perfectly.
Should Liverpool succeed in landing Isak, he would join a formidable frontline that already features Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo, adding significant depth and firepower as the club looks to defend its Premier League crown.
